Mother’s Day Is Calling—A brooch inspired by Louise Bourgeois
Share
If you’ve been following my work from the start, you may remember one of my very first brooches—The Louise & The Huntsman Brooch. It’s still one of your favourites, and it holds a story that feels especially meaningful around Mother’s Day.
Louise Bourgeois iconic spider sculptures: powerful tribute to motherhood in modern art
The inspiration began in Bilbao, where I stood beneath Maman—the monumental spider sculpture by French-American artist Louise Bourgeois. At nearly 9 metres tall, this spider is a tribute to her mother, who was a weaver. Louise saw her mother as strong, nurturing, protective—and also complex. Like a spider’s silk, which can wrap and shelter, but also trap, Maman expresses both tenderness and tension, power and vulnerability.
I paired the name Louise with The Huntsman—a giant spider known for being fast, agile, and clever enough to hunt without spinning a web. A hunter and forager, huntsman spiders can be very protective over their egg-sacs.
It felt like the perfect match: a tribute to the (protective) strength, intuition, and quiet intelligence so many mothers carry.
And fun fact—this brooch was the very first piece I ever made for my own mother!
So if you’re looking for a meaningful and stylish gift for your mum, your partner, or a mother-figure in your life this Mother’s Day, The Louise & The Huntsman Brooch might just be the one.
Handmade, full of story—and crafted to last. 🤍
